The Republic of Kiribati has little land area and infertile coralline soils. Combined with long spells of dry weather, it makes the growing of crops difficult. As a result, atoll communities face problems in maintaining food security and eating a balanced diet. A new research and development centre for atoll agriculture is being established in South Tarawa. The centre will study soil improvement, water harvesting and irrigation, crops adapted to atoll conditions, pest and disease control, improved local livestock breeds, waste management and improve agro-forestry systems.
