Tourism is the mainstay of many Pacific island economies and is increasing in countries where governments and the private sector have addressed constraints impeding growth. These include high transport costs, security issues and lack of appropriate infrastructure. Despite the global recession, tourism has increased in some countries with holiday-makers from Australia and New Zealand choosing to travel closer to home than to more expensive destinations overseas.
