Non-communicable diseases are responsible for an estimated three in four deaths in the Pacific and the leading cause of death in at least eight Pacific island countries. Smoking and obesity and poor diet are leading causes of health problems. When coupled with high levels of infectious disease, fragile health systems become increasingly strained.
