Logging
High economic growth in recent years in some Pacific island countries has been driven by the mineral boom and logging. Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste each experienced economic growth of above five per cent in 2008. This was primarily driven by high global prices for minerals, timber and oil. Recent declines in commodity prices, and the depletion of these resources, have underscored the need to strengthen non-resource sectors and sustainable management of existing natural resources. |
