Fishing
Solomon Islands—A lucrative catch, cannery bound tuna. Fish are the biggest natural resource for Pacific island nations and fishing is part and parcel of everyday life in most coastal communities. The danger is that stocks will become over-fished and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing will occur on a large scale. Local families will find it harder to find fish and countries will not receive maximum benefits. Well- managed fisheries could provide sizeable and reliable incomes for Pacific island countries—much more than the US$60-$70 million they collectively receive at present. |
