Vanuatu—Learning new skills.

Vanuatu—Learning new skills.

Remittances are a major source of income and a safety net for many poor people in Pacific island nations. Most households in Tonga receive remittances averaging about US$3,000 a year, while in Fiji nearly half the households receive about $1,300 a year. Some Pacific islanders work in other countries under partnership agreements. New Zealand allows a restricted number of seasonal workers from other island nations to work in its horticulture and viticulture industries. Australia funds the Australia Pacific Technical College to train Pacific islanders for jobs in industries where international demand is generally high.
